Public Art

Barbara

BrushRidgmar Mall held an event in 2008, called “Brush with Greatness”.  They asked me to create a large-scale piece of art at the bag-stuffing event.  I used as “paints” and sculptural components old makeup provided by women volunteers, many of whom are survivors.  As part of their volunteer service, they were asked to bring in old lipsticks, eye shadows, eye liners, etc, that they no longer used. The event was just a start. The piece, which I have entitled “Barbara”, in memory of my Mother, took several weeks to complete.  I had many friends volunteer to help tie all of the makeup on and many other folks brought more make up for us to use.  The heart, a compact, belonged to a friend’s great grandmother.  He thought that she would be very happy that it is the heart of the piece. I created a life-size, joyous, freestanding sculpture. Then “Barbara” was donated to Ridgmar’s partnering cancer organization, Komen Tarrant County, for display in their center.  She, also, travels to all of their events like “Race for the Cure” where many people have their photographs taken with her. The message of the sculpture is one of joy, hope, health and the beauty of life.
